ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a known problem in our city: porch pirates stealing packages right off people’s front steps. But what one Albuquerque man caught on his camera, even caught him off guard. The homeowner said it’s sad to see a little kid committing a crime and an adult woman not stopping him.
"It’s just sad to see, especially from a little kid and for the mom to be okay with it," said homeowner Daniel Perez.
Perez lives in a neighborhood off Central and Atrisco. He said he was on his way home Tuesday evening when his home surveillance cameras captured something he wasn’t expecting: a child porch pirate.
"They kind of stopped in front of the house, the little boy is the one who pointed towards the house, then the mother kind of looked there," Perez said, describing the surveillance footage. "She kind of took a look at everybody else to see if anyone else was taking a look, so they started walking back down the street eastbound."
Seconds later, the kid came back.
"The kid picked up the package and took off running," said Perez.
The woman and the kid disappeared with Perez’s wedding gift from his fiancee’s family.
"It was a present from my fiance’s nina," said Perez. "I guess it was one of the higher-end coffee makers."
Albuquerque police are disturbed by the footage.
"Adults typically use kids in a crime, but what they don’t know is that it’s a felony," said Officer Simon Drobik.
As for Perez, he wants his wedding gift back and for the kid to understand this is wrong.
"It’s all about respect," said Perez. "If it’s not yours, don’t take it. I hope he can learn from this and hopefully he can do better."
Perez said he is now in the process of filing a police report.
Police said they don’t know who that woman is or her relationship to the child, but getting him to do the dirty work could put her behind bars for more than two years.
